Socrates cafe

For People Who Sometimes Like More than Small Talk

BACKGROUND:  The idea behind Socrates Café is that we learn more when we discuss together. That includes asking questions and trying to answer them. Often the questions lead to other questions. A typical group meets in a public place and is open to anyone who wishes to attend. Typically there are no prerequisites, and no reading or other preparation required. While we discuss together, each person decides what he or she believes. We feel no need to come to an agreement.

DETAILS: Whatever topic members of the group, by prearrangement, wants to bring up. We have one topic at each meeting. It is a chance to do more than small talk. We learn from each other and share with each other. Example Topic: What is the role of reason in the decisions you make in your life and what is the role of emotion? Do you trust both? Can either mislead you sometime?

WHEN: Second and fourth Saturdays during June, July and August. 9:30 – 11:30 AM.

WHERE: Cabin behind The Old Gallery, Allenspark, CO 80510

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: As an organizer and participant in this discussion group, I always find it interesting to hear what other people have to say. Participants sometimes say, “you caused me to think about things I hadn’t thought about before.”

CONTACT INFORMATION: Have further questions – the best way for people to learn about the group is to come; and those who come suggest topics. Or E-mail Sid @ swaldman@haverford.edu.
