Soup Nights

“AN INFORMAL SOUP & SOCIAL NIGHT”

WHEN: Year-round; 1st Tuesday of the month; 6:00 – 8:00 PM

WHAT: Soup night at The Old Gallery is an informal meal together of the local community, neighbors and friends. It is an opportunity to share news of the area and of course some jokes. All are welcome – it is a great opportunity to make new acquaintances and reconnect with others.

HOW: Bring a soup, salad, bread, drinks or dessert or anything else you have around. A pizza showed up once and didn’t last long. But if your cupboard is bare or you’ve had a busy day, just bring yourself and an appetite. We bring our own dishware, when we remember- there’s always extras to use.

HISTORY: Soup Night at The Old Gallery was inspired by local Allenspark resident Edie DeWeese. “All I wanted was to see some people–not for a program, concert, or talk–just to get together. I thought it would be fun to have a very informal meal–no strings attached, no responsibilities, just show up and see who else is there to talk to. Break bread, slurp soup, and get to know folks.” The stone soup supper tradition remains today as a year-round gathering!

Stone Soup
Stone Soup

Background on the Stone Soup concept: “Some travelers come to a village, carrying nothing more than an empty cooking pot. Upon their arrival, the villagers are unwilling to share any of their food stores with the hungry travelers. Then the travelers go to a stream and fill the pot with water, drop a large stone in it, and place it over a fire. One of the villagers becomes curious and asks what they are doing. The travelers answer that they are making “stone soup”, which tastes wonderful, although it still needs a little bit of garnish to improve the flavor, which they are missing. The villager does not mind parting with a few carrots to help them out, so that gets added to the soup. Another villager walks by, inquiring about the pot, and the travelers again mention their stone soup which has not reached its full potential yet. The villager hands them a little bit of seasoning to help them out. More and more villagers walk by, each adding another ingredient. Finally, a delicious and nourishing pot of soup is enjoyed by all.”
