SUMMARY:A Tale of Two Pikas: Tracking Change on Mt. Chapin
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Rachel Billings\, PhD student\, CU Boulder Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology \nLunch: 12-12:30 pm\nPika Talk: 12:30-1:30 pm \nThis lunchtime learning opportunity is in partnership with Lunch Bunch and Allenspark Community Church and will be held at 16 Washington St. \nCome for lunch\, the pika talk\, or both!\nFor lunch\, RSVP to Cindy at rockettwoman@aol.com by June 20th.\nRSVP is not necessary if just attending the talk. \nPika are tiny\, vocal mammals living high in the Rocky Mountains. They’re not only adorable — they’re also at the center of a fascinating scientific mystery! Join us for an engaging talk about the American pika and some surprising research happening right in our backyard at Rocky Mountain National Park. Scientists have discovered a zone near Mt. Chapin where two subspecies of pika overlap and are actually producing hybrid offspring — and they can tell the difference by their calls! Researchers are using genetic analysis and recordings of their unique voices to track how this hybrid zone has shifted over time and what it means for the future of these remarkable little animals. With climate change impacting pika habitat\, understanding how these subspecies are adapting and interacting has never been more important. Come learn what the pikas of Rocky Mountain National Park are telling us — one tiny squeak at a time!
